City Preparations for Tropical Storm Underway

Brunt of Storm Expected to Impact Region on Sunday/Monday

Post Date:08/18/2023 5:44 PM

The City of Oceanside is actively tracking Hurricane Hilary as it moves north.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects the hurricane to weaken to a Tropical Storm by the time it reaches Southern California this weekend with the potential for heavy rains and strong winds into next week.

Preparations are underway; public safety officials have emergency plans in place and swift water rescue teams on standby. The City’s Public Works team has been clearing storm channels and storm drains. Crews will be at the ready for downed limbs or trees.  Teams will be patrolling to identify any issues that may arise.

To ensure safety, the Oceanside Pier will be closed on Sunday, August 20, 2023.  The Strand between Seagaze and Wisconsin will also be closed as high tide times coincide with the storm and high surf.

The City urges residents and businesses to sign up for Ready Oceanside emergency notifications by texting the word “Oceanside” to the number 67283 to stay up to date on flooded or closed roads.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 20, people may dial 211 for storm-related questions.

Visit the City webpage for emergency preparedness information.
