The Oceanside Police Department encourages you to register your bike for free at project529.
We partnered with 529 Garage to implement a valuable bike registry program aimed at combating bike theft. Oceansiders can register their bikes, including e-bikes, with detailed information such as serial numbers, distinguishing features, and any modifications or damages. By doing this, OPD can efficiently reunite stolen bikes with their rightful owners. Register your bike at project529.com/garage
Our goal is to register as many bikes as possible in order to protect your property and return more bikes back to their owners if lost or stolen.
More bike theft prevention measures:
- Always securely lock your bicycle. Use a U-lock, securing wheels and frame to a stationary object such as a post, fence, tree, or bike rack. For extra security, add a chain or cable with a good padlock.
- When your bike is at home, don't leave it in the yard, driveway, patio, front porch, or open garage. Keep it in a locked garage or storage room or inside your residence.
- Record the serial number of your bicycle and keep it with the sales receipt and a photograph of the bike.
- Mark your bicycle with unique number/engraver to deter thieves. This also helps officers in identifying and returning your stolen bike to you.
Since we're on the subject of bikes, here are some bicycle safety tips, too:
- For your protection, always wear a helmet. Tips on helmet fit
- Make yourself visible with proper reflectors and lights. Dress to be seen!
- Obey all traffic signs and signals; they apply to bikes, too.
- Ride predictably and watch for car doors opening. Make eye contact with drivers.
- Use hand signals when turning.
- Ride with traffic, never against it.
- Ride a bike that fits you; if it's too big, it's harder to control the bike.
- Don't be distracted by texting or earbuds while you ride.
Stay safe, Oceanside!
