Wildfire Preparedness in Oceanside

Post Date:01/12/2025 8:17 AM
Our hearts go out to Los Angeles residents as they grapple with the aftermath of the devastating wildfires. While we cannot control when or where wildfires strike, we have prepared extensively to safeguard the Oceanside community.

Enhanced Local Leadership

  • Oceanside has recently strengthened its emergency response capability by creating and filling a new full-time Emergency Manager position.
  • The City’s Emergency Operations Center is prepared for immediate activation if needed.
  • Our Emergency Manager is actively updating the City's emergency programs and operations plans.

Regional Coordination & Resources

  • The Water Agency Emergency Collaborative enables immediate regional response, allowing resources to be deployed wherever they're needed most.
  • We maintain daily communication with San Diego Gas & Electric.
  • Our mutual aid agreements with neighboring jurisdictions guarantee access to additional resources when needed.
  • In periods of Red Flag Warning, the state has prepositioned tankers and engines.

Water Infrastructure & Availability

Strategic investments in water infrastructure provide multiple water sources for firefighting, including:

  • Readily accessible surface water in the Buena Vista Lagoon, as well as Olivenhain and San Vicente reservoirs.
  • Helicopter-accessible water resources positioned throughout the region.
  • Well-maintained regional infrastructure that ensures reliable water pressure and availability.
  • Each of Oceanside's 7,400 hydrants has maintenance performed on a regular schedule by Water Utilities staff. This includes turning all internal and external hydrant valves, as well as visibility efforts such as paint and reflective markings where needed.

Proven Emergency Response System

San Diego County has developed one of the most sophisticated wildfire response systems in California, built on real-world experience from the 2003, 2007, and 2017 wildfires. The Oceanside Fire Department regularly conducts training exercises specifically focused on wildfire scenarios.

Oceanside, along with the entire San Diego County fire response network stands ready to address any vegetation fires that develop.

Reporting Overgrown Vegetation

To report overgrown, dry vegetation that could be a fire hazard, please submit the location through one of these methods:

  • Use the "My Oceanside" app
  • Call the City's Customer Care Center at (760) 435-4500
  • Or email at customercare@oceansideca.org.
