OCEANSIDE, CA — A Driver’s License/Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint will be facilitated by the Oceanside Police Department at an undisclosed location in the City of Oceanside on Friday, December 12th, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, December 13th.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired-driving crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing drivers suspected of DUI from the roadway while also educating non-impaired motorists about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Officers will also ensure motorists passing through the checkpoint are properly licensed.
Although DUI incidents are commonly associated with alcohol, many prescription medications can also impair a driver. While a limited amount of cannabis (marijuana) is legal for adults 21 years and older to possess, it remains unlawful to drive while under the influence of cannabis. Motorists driving under the influence of any combination of drugs and/or alcohol are subject to arrest.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
