OCEANSIDE, CA — A Driver’s License/Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint will be facilitated by the Oceanside Police Department at an undisclosed location in the City of Oceanside on Friday, May 22nd from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 23rd.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI Checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking drivers suspected of DUI off the road while also educating non-impaired drivers about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Officers will also ensure motorists present at the Checkpoint are properly licensed.
Although incidents of DUI are commonly associated with alcohol, many prescription medications are also impairing substances. While a limited amount of cannabis (marijuana) is legal for adults 21 years of age and older to possess, it is unlawful to drive while under the influence of cannabis. Motorists driving while under the influence of any combination of drugs and/or alcohol are subject to arrest.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
