Summer Reading 2026 Kicks Off

Post Date:05/18/2026 9:10 AM
Oceanside Public Library invites children, teens, and adults to participate in Summer Reading 2026 by signing up online at oceansidelibrary.org. All ages earn prizes and are invited to attend fun and enriching events from June 1 through August 8, 2026. This year’s theme is “Plant a Seed – Read!” with a focus on growing, gardening and reading. The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library sponsor Summer Reading for all ages.

Kids ages 0-12 earn prizes for reading and can also complete engaging activities. Kids and teens will receive a free fair ticket for signing up for summer reading, while supplies last and during the duration of the San Diego County Fair. After reading, or being read to, 10 hours or 10 books, kids earn a prize bag, which includes a free book, museum and food coupons, and craft kits. Kids and families can enjoy storytimes, book clubs, and attend other entertaining and educational events, such as Totally Tide Pools with Living Coast Discovery Center on Tuesday, June 30 at 2 pm. at the Civic Center Library. Students will learn about tide pools as a habitat and the animals that live there. Through up-close animal encounters, they will learn about their adaptations and how they can survive life on the rocks.

Teens ages 13-17 earn a prize bag full of books and other goodies for reading 5 books. Library events for teens include a variety of book clubs, games, movies and art activities. Teens are invited to attend a Thrift Flip Sewing Workshop with local business Bubs Studio on Friday, June 12, at 4:30 p.m. at the Mission Branch Library. This 2-hour workshop will teach teens how to take their old fabrics and transform them into a cute and useful bag. Sewing machines and other materials will be provided at this free opportunity. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fabrics to use. Space is limited and registration is required. Additionally, teens, ages 14 to 17 who are looking for something to do and wanting to give back to their community, can sign up to volunteer at the Library this summer.

Kids and teens ages 0-18 are also invited to participate in Lunch at the Library this summer. Meals will be offered weekdays at Civic Center Library at 11 a.m., starting June 22, and John Landes Community Center Library and Joe Balderrama Park at 12 p.m., starting June 15.

Adults participate in Summer Reading too! Adults read books and attend Library events to earn fun prizes and be entered into prize drawings. Events for adults will include learning about monarch conservation, introduction to camping, and exploring how to make your yard more sustainable. The Metropolitan Water District in partnership with the City of Oceanside will provide a class on turf replacement where participants will learn how to transform their yard into a beautiful, sustainable, and water-efficient landscape on Wednesday, June 24 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center Library Community Room.
